Fashion legend Antony Price, the visionary UK-based designer responsible for many legendary styles associated with David Bowie, Roxy Music, and Queen Camilla, has passed away aged 80.

Price was best known for his defined forms and theatrical styles, such as the soft-colored suits that became famous from the iconic band Duran Duran's seminal music video for "their hit Rio".

"They honored him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' Duran Duran shared a message online."

His passing follows just weeks after he debuted his most recent collection in London, which was his first major show in over 30 years. The performer Lily Allen walked in a dress evoking the famous black velvet "dress" historically worn by Diana, Princess of Wales.

An Enduring Influence

A native of Yorkshire, born in 1945, Price relocated to London at the start of the 1960s to study at the esteemed Royal College of Art.

Upon completing his studies, he began designing menswear at the label Stirling Copper and was the creator of the tight, button-detailed trousers that The Rolling Stones' frontman Mick Jagger wore during the band's "Gimme Shelter" tour in 1969.

He established his eponymous line in 1979 and staged his first fashion show a year later. The show opened with looks from the famed model Jerry Hall, who later wore the bridal gown Price designed for her for her marriage to Sir Mick Jagger.

Working with Legends

A key creative partner of David Bowie, Price was the mind behind the memorable jacket the artist wore for his "the song As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.

His characteristic talent to blend elements of men's and women's fashion along with his expert craftsmanship in designing form-fitting garments made him a "one-of-a-kind talent," in the words of the British Fashion Council.

By the 1990s, he began working on pieces for the then-Duchess of Cornwall, Camilla, including several ensembles for her American tour following her marriage.

With a vocation that covered more than five decades, Price held his ultimate fashion presentation in London last month in partnership with the label 16Arlington.

  • Sculpted Silhouettes: The core of his aesthetic.
  • Dramatic Impact: Influencing music videos and stagewear.
  • Genre-Blending Design: Merging menswear with womenswear.
  • Clients from Stage to Palace: Including music legends and the future Queen Consort.

Design circles laments the passing to a genuine innovator whose legacy on style and culture remains indelibly etched.
