Israelis commemorate two-year anniversary of 7 October attacks as Palestinian ceasefire negotiations continue
Citizens have come together throughout the country to commemorate two years since the Hamas-conducted offensive on that fateful day in October 2023, as talks advanced in Egypt over a conclusion to the conflict in Gaza.
The incident resulted in over 1,200 people killed and 251 others captured back to Gaza as prisoners. It was the most deadliest day for Jews since the Holocaust.
Israel reacted by launching a defensive operation in Gaza which has claimed over 67,000 people, as reported by the area's Hamas-controlled health ministry. Its figures are seen as trustworthy by the United Nations and other international bodies.
"Our violent adversaries have caused great damage, but they have not broken us," the prime minister stated on Tuesday.
He also vowed to "realize all the aims of the war: the homecoming of all the abducted, the elimination of the Hamas regime and the guarantee that Gaza will no longer pose a danger to Israel".
Remembrance Ceremonies Across Israel
The government authorities postponed official commemorations until October 16th - after the end of the religious holiday season - but ceremonies still took place throughout the country on that day.
A memorial ceremony for the loved ones of Israelis who died in the Hamas incident was organized in Tel Aviv. Organized by the victims' relatives, it was televised on Israeli TV networks.
Some time earlier, a moment of silence was held across the country.
Ceasefire Meetings in Egypt
Meanwhile, both sides' representatives gathered in the Egyptian tourist destination of the Egyptian city for a second day of third-party negotiations to review the terms of the plan.
A senior representative knowledgeable about the negotiations indicated that an late session of negotiations started at evening in Egypt.
The source said the day's discussions ended without significant progress, due to differences over the proposed Israeli pullout plans from Gaza and over guarantees Hamas seeks to guarantee Israel does not restart hostilities after the initial stage of the agreement.
He added that the discussions are "difficult and have still not achieve any real breakthrough," but noted that facilitators are working hard to narrow the gaps between the two sides.
Essential Points in Negotiations
- An enduring halt to fighting
- The swap of the captives still detained by Hamas for inmates from Gaza
- The removal of troops from Gaza
- Plans for assistance distribution
- Future governance of the territory
Civilian Reaction
In Tel Aviv's Hostages Square earlier, 29-year-old Hagar - whose brother survived the incident on the Nova music festival, where many attendees were killed and numerous more were captured by Hamas militants - shared: "No location appears as home now and until each abducted person are released not a single person will have peace of mind."
"Once we see everybody home again, we can breathe once more. Then we can commence recover," she added.
Outside the leader's residence in the capital, people congregated to show their support for the loved ones of the abducted. Israel states 48 continue in detention in Gaza, 20 of whom are believed to be surviving.
Protester one woman remarked: "We must do whatever arrangement needed for the hostages to return. But we sincerely need guarantees that we will be protected."
Opinion polls now frequently demonstrate that approximately seventy percent of the population want the conflict to end in return for the liberation of the captives.
Gaza Situation
At the area of the music event, those paying respects came together to remember the victims.
From the site, the sound of aerial bombardments and artillery could be detected just a brief space away in Gaza, where witnesses said the severe Israeli bombardment persisted.
In the main city, bombardments were documented in the early hours of that day in the western neighborhood, sector and zone areas and in the east side district of Sheikh Radwan, as well Shati refugee camp to the northwestern area.
"Once the night falls, the fear arrives with it," evacuated Gaza City resident a local woman, whose teenage son was killed by an Israeli aerial attack previously, described.
"My family are terrified of the attacks. During nighttime we are resting together, embracing, especially my smallest child who places his head on me throughout the night."
"Continuously we check the updates to see the situation. And I'm concerned that this ceasefire will not be completed and that the war will resume to us."
Health Crisis
The medical facility in the urban area said it had received the bodies of half dozen people by the afternoon, including three killed in an Israeli attack in the southern district.
A different healthcare center in the southern city of Khan Younis reported two more victims had been transported. A person was lost his life by Israeli troops while attempting to get aid to the south region, medical staff said.
