Jailhouse Surprise: The FormerPresident Bolsonaro Faces Time Behind Bars

He fought the legal system and the law triumphed.

A couple of months following being handed a 27-year sentence for attempting to “eradicate” Brazil’s democratic institutions, one-time leader Jair Bolsonaro at last looks jail-bound.

Anticipated Incarceration

The convicted instigator – who has been subject to residential detention in his mansion while a set of court processes and challenges unfold – is broadly anticipated to be incarcerated in the coming days, amidst mounting rumors that he will be moved to a notorious maximum security facility.

Past Comments on Inmates

Over Bolsonaro’s 40-year time in politics, the conservative ex- military man displayed little mercy for the country's inmates.

“Why should we give these lowlifes a good life?” he previously wondered. “They deserve to be messed, period. That's my opinion.”

Incarceration Location Speculation

Yet the idea of Bolsonaro himself winding up in the Papuda prison maximum security prison in Brasília has shocked allies, several of whom this week inspected the prison in an apparent attempt to prevent the supreme court from transferring him there.

Allies Voice Concerns

The senator isn't the only voice expressing views prior to the ex-leader's predicted incarceration.

Penning in a major newspaper, another ally, the former communications minister Fábio Wajngarten, deplored the “severe” conclusion to Bolsonaro’s “spotless” time in office and asserted Brazil was about to experience “the largest political injustice in its history”.

“This is an unfairness that erodes the spirits of countless Brazilian citizens,” the former minister said.

Varied General Response

That may be true considering the substantial support Bolsonaro maintains on the conservative side. Yet his expected jailing has also pleased the hearts of numerous other people who feel he should be incarcerated for plotting to stop his successor from taking power – and additionally plotting to have him assassinated.

Congressman Otoni, a representative for the current leader's Workers’ party, commented: “No one wants Bolsonaro to be placed in a dungeon. Not a soul desires Bolsonaro to be placed in segregation. Nobody desires Bolsonaro to lack food or for him to have to rest on hard ground. We want him to get dignified treatment – but respectful handling behind bars. He can’t persist being his own prison warden for his whole life.”

Otoni was struck by how Bolsonaro allies, who have long celebrating the harsh treatment of inmates, had unexpectedly become aware to their rights. “Just now has the extreme right – which has consistently claimed that civil liberties should not be for lawbreakers – decided to tour a prison to find out what situations are actually like,” he said.

“Bolsonaro is a criminal,” he affirmed, but that did not mean he merited “shameful, insulting conduct”.
