Jets Coach Glenn Confident Kris Boyd Will Recover Fully After NYC Shooting

Jets head coach Aaron Glenn has stated that he recently spoke with cornerback Kris Boyd and is confident the athlete will be OK after suffering a gunshot wound in central New York in the early hours of Sunday.

Glenn described that Boyd, who is hospitalized, was “in good spirits” during their recent conversation.

“That gives me comfort, is that he’s in good spirits,” Glenn stated on Wednesday. “His family, they’re in good spirits and he will come through this without issue.”

The coach did not know when Boyd would leave the medical facility, where he is reported as critical but stable.

“Don’t know just yet,” the coach said. “However, I can share, hearing him speak, he seemed very positive. And again, that puts my mind at ease, given his positive frame of mind and he expresses himself so positively.”

Authorities released surveillance images earlier this week of a man sought in the shooting of Boyd. The reason behind the incident is currently under review and authorities said it is unknown if Boyd was targeted. No one else was hurt according to reports.

The shooting happened in the early morning on Sunday in the area between the famous arena and the iconic square. Boyd, 29, was taken to a local hospital after being shot in the abdomen, according to authorities. The assailant escaped.

Glenn shared Boyd has been on his mind “a ton” since learning of the incident. The coach said that Boyd and his wife just had a newborn.

“The first thing I thought about, he recently became a father,” Glenn noted. “And I’m thinking about his wife, worrying about his newborn and my priority is his well-being. That was my main concern.
“A certain process is underway, which I won’t get into, but It is reassuring that he will recover excellently.”

Boyd hasn’t played during the current season, after joining the team, after his season was cut short due to injury on August 18 with an injury to his shoulder that required surgery.

Boyd came to New York as a free agent in spring and was expected to be an important component of an improved special teams group under Glenn and ST coordinator Chris Banjo. But Boyd was injured during preseason drills on August 2 and was taken away on a cart.

Boyd continued to be present during the entire campaign while recovering from the shoulder injury.

“He remains involved with our activities,” Glenn stated. “I mean, he attends every game. He’s fully engaged. To be one of the top special teams players in this league, he has excelled at supporting his teammates.”

Boyd, a Texas native, began his career with the Vikings after being a seventh-round pick by Minnesota out of UT in the 2019 draft. He later played for Arizona in last year and then joined Houston’s practice squad subsequently. Boyd agreed to a one-year deal worth $1.6m with the Jets in the spring.
