Royal Air Force Typhoon jets have operated alongside French warplanes in a combined operation against an hidden munitions depot in Syria employed by the Daesh militant organization, as stated by the British defence ministry.

The facility, identified by intelligence, was believed to be storing arms and explosives, the announcement noted, and was positioned in hills just north of the historic site of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"Our fighter planes used laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to hit a number of entry passages providing entry to the site... early reports are that the target was engaged successfully," officials stated.

There was no indication of any civilian impact in the attack late on Saturday and each participating jet returned to base without incident, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon FGR4s were assisted by a Voyager tanker plane.

The Islamic State group - also known as ISIS - enforced extremist governance over significant areas in Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This action underscores the UK's leading role, and determination to work closely with our partners, to stamp out any re-emergence of the terrorist group and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the region," Britain's Defence Chief John Healey said.

British military aircraft have performed surveillance missions over Syrian airspace to "deter any efforts to regroup" of IS after its routing at the climactic battle in Baghuz in the year 2019, the ministry said.

"I want to thank all the members of British forces involved in this operation for their expertise and their valour," he added. "Including them were thousands of British troops stationed over the festive period. This operation, to remove dangerous terrorists who threaten our safety, highlights how British military are always on standby, all year round, keeping Britain secure within its borders and powerful internationally."

During December, the United States armed forces carried out what it described as a "massive strike" targeting Islamic State objectives in the country, after an ambush claimed the lives of two US troops and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra.

The UN reports Daesh still boasts roughly 5-7 thousand militants in Iraq and Syria.
