Jurgen Klopp admits coming back to lead Liverpool is theoretically possible.
Jurgen Klopp, who stepped down from Liverpool in 2024, has suggested that returning someday is a possibility. The 58-year-old, post a game-changing nine-year spell which brought a European Cup triumph and the Reds’ first league title in 30 years, has since taken on roles as head of global soccer within the Red Bull organization and providing guidance with the German Football League.
Fan Sentiment and Klopp’s Candid Remarks
The club claimed England's top flight in the previous campaign, but many fans who revere Klopp would be thrilled by the possibility that he might come back one day. During an extensive chat, he shared with Steven Bartlett: “I said I refuse to lead a different club in England. Therefore if then it’s Liverpool...yeah. It's plausible.”
“At 58 years old, that means I could make the decision down the line, who knows. Is a decision required immediately? In that case, I'd stay away. But thank God, I don’t have to do that. I can just see what the future brings.”
What Would Lure Him Back?
Pressed on the specific conditions would have to unfold to bring him back to management, he confessed he isn't eager toward coming back. “It's unclear to me, I enjoy my current role,” he stated. “I don’t miss coaching; No desire to be during downpours through long matches; I'm glad to skip press conferences multiple times weekly or constant media duties weekly.
“The locker room isn't missed in that context, yet sharing a meal with the team enjoying conversation, is pleasant. Success was frequent so there was often a very good mood at the club. I can still hear Virgil [Van Dijk’s] laugh ringing in my ears to illustrate.”
Praise for His Successor
He spoke highly of the current boss, crediting him for the tweaks which secured the championship in the previous season. Liverpool have lost four in a row across various tournaments following significant transfers, though he denied the notion it could be a decline.
“[Liverpool have] a top-class attacker like Florian Wirtz, doubters will be silenced if you use the wrong words. An outstanding player. Ekitike, incredible player. They have a strong thoughtfully assembled roster. No need for concern about Liverpool, things will improve.”
Emotional Tribute for the Late Forward
Klopp also spoke emotionally about the death of the Portuguese star, a player he signed while in charge, and the effect on Liverpool. The forward died tragically in a car crash together with his sibling this past summer.
“How do you replace a person like him? It goes beyond the player himself, it's his character. I can’t imagine the dressing room without him in it. I find it difficult to discuss on this topic. A profound tragedy for the entire squad too. No one within the club would cite it as an excuse but it is the situation. Entering the changing area which he filled completely. Dealing with that on a personal level is not easy. Impossible.”
