A uniquely yellow-fronted apartment block visible behind helped us verify the footage.

We are analyzing video footage and photographs posted this morning that show the scene of a alleged vehicle-borne explosive explosion that Russian officials say fatally injured a senior military officer in Moscow.

Officials in Russia confirmed that Lt Gen Fanil Sarvarov was in the car that detonated and that he later died of his injuries. An investigation is currently ongoing.

Our starting point to check the site from which the images were from was based on posts saying the explosion occurred on Yasenevaya Street in the southern district of the capital city of Russia.

We used panoramic mapping services on digital map platforms and the local mapping service Yandex to corroborate the distinctive yellow hue of a adjacent apartment building captured in the footage.

Locating other buildings, streetlights and the street layout verified where the footage were captured.

Additionally, we verified that the videos were recent and that the visuals had not undergone digital alteration.
